Tour Insight

Our Greater Durban birding day tour takes you to multiple different habitats and altitudes. We’ll visit habitats such as the Krantzkloof mist belt forest, Pigeon Valley coastal forest, Umgeni River estuary and mouth, Umhlanga Estuary and coastal dune forest, Sappi Stanger wetland, and possibly the Amatikulu coastal grassland and forest.

Tour Overview

The climate is subtropical, mostly hot and humid during the day in the summer and cooler in the evenings. Rain is possible, usually in the form of summer convection thunderstorms, and cool, wet weather is also possible in the event of a cold front moving up from the south in the winter months. Frost and snow are not possible, but hail in summer and mist in winter at high altitudes is possible. This is a summer rainfall region, averaging between 700mm and 1,100mm annually. The driest month is July; and the most rainfall falls in January. Temperatures range from 8°C (46.6°F) in winter to 32°C (89.6°F) in summer, with an average maximum of 27°C (80.6°F) and an average minimum of 12°C (53.6°F). The warmest month is February.

Coastal and riverine forest, coastal grassland, estuaries, wetlands, sandy and rocky sea shores. These host numerous threatened and endangered bird species, some endemics, as well as great mammal and floral diversity.
